Samson seems to find the most comfortable spots to sleep…

I’m not sure what happened today! This does not look comfortable at all!

.kamryn & samson.

Kamryn came to play on Friday! I love to watch her play with Samson; it’s the cutest thing! She loves Samson and he obviously loves her…he lets her touch his face & paws and give him lots of hugs & kisses. Kamryn offers him tea when she’s having a tea party…it’s absolutely adorable!

Usually, when he’s laying down, she whispers, “shhh! Samsie sweeping!” Today, she kept saying “Wake up Samsie! Wake up!”

I love it!

.dog days of summer.

The dogs sure enjoyed their time at Priest Lake too…they took advantage of their time and caught up on their sleep. HA! If only I could sleep half as much as they do!

It seemed like I was constantly taking pictures of them sleeping because they just so darn cute when they’re sleeping!

.nursing Samdawg.

Samson & I took a visit to the vet on Friday. His dew claws weren’t removed as a puppy as they usually are. He’d been having some problems with them – as he runs outside and in the weeds, the dew claws catch on things. A few years ago, one tore and it had to have stitches. He’d been licking them like crazy so I figured something similar had happened again. We went to the vet to get some sedatives for the 4th of July and to check out a puncture wound he had under his chin. I asked about the dew claws and the vet said she wouldn’t object to removing them even though it’s a tough surgery to recover from as a “middle aged dog.” So, I made the appointment for two days later along with a teeth cleaning which he needed.

I felt AWFUL taking him to the vet that morning and leaving him there a happy, licking dog – he had NO IDEA what they were going to do to him and what I’d walked him into. :( So sad!

My Mom & I picked him up a few hours later. The nurse gave me LOTS of instructions, some prescriptions, and a very sedated dog with a cone collar and two bandaged front legs. He slept on my lap all the way home and barely moved from the couch all evening.

IMG_0011

Did I already mention that I felt terrible about what I’d done to him?!

Look at those sad eyes!

IMG_0013 IMG_0015

He did fairly well with his bandaged legs. He didn’t bother them too much. He had a regimen of antibiotics, pain medications, and anti-inflammatory pills to take 2 times a day. One is beef flavored so he thinks it’s a treat – he loves it.
One looks like a pill, acts like a pill, tastes like a pill – so I hide in a finger full of peanut butter and he takes it like a champ.
The last one is a liquid that I put into a syringe to give to him. To say that he hates it is an understatement. I have to hold him from behind and literally open his jaw with my fingers to shove the syringe in his mouth. He gasps and puffs, but takes it ok. Did I mention that it's red and it stains? Yep. Lovely.

I had to take off his bandages on Tuesday morning. It was traumatic and I think we both cried. It wasn’t as easy to remove them as the nurse had described. He did really well with an incompetent-amateur nurse like me.

He’s had to wear his cone collar more now since the stainless steal stitches bother him more and catch his attention when the wires poke him. We try not to laugh too much at him running into tables and chairs with his collar on.

Graphic photo ahead…..here’s his wounds…

Poor Samson….he’s been a champ and I’m really glad his recovery hasn’t been as bad as I’d thought it would be. We go on Monday to have his stitches removed and hopefully NO MORE cone collar. It’s been too hot for it!

.happy birthday samdawg.

Today is Samson’s 5th birthday. He’s officially older than I am (in dog years)!

For his birthday, he got a couple spoonfuls of peanut butter in a bowl. Nothing better!

What the heck?! Thanks to Coco for teaching Samson this not-so-cute trick.

How do I stop this???

...the end of summer break...

So, I woke up on Monday morning already feeling sorry for myself that I only have one week of summer left. I know that those of you with full-time, non-teaching jobs probably just threw up a little in your mouth, but hey - it's my blog and I get to write my feelings in it!
I love summer just because on most days I get to wake up and decide, what am I going to today?! I could be lazy and watch The Today Show while blog-stalking or I could get ambitious and do something!

Anyway - when I woke up on Monday, I knew I needed to get my act together and get ready to go to Priest Lake with Melissa. We wanted to get up there in the early afternoon so we could spend some time with our cousin Lisa and her family. Well...life had other plans.

Samson went outside with my Dad and came back in acting totally spastic. He was running around acting like a crazy dog. My Dad said he thought Samson got bit by an insect. Dad went outside and when he came back in he said, "yep - he got stung by a bee" and had the dead bee in his hand. Poor Samson got stung between the hind legs and was so uncomfortable. He couldn't sit down at all. He was panting hard and could not relax. I decided to call the vet - of course, they said to come in asap.

Mom & I ran him to the vet in Othello. They gave him a shot of Benadryl and sent us with some pain reliever/anti-inflammatory pills. It took him a while to settle down, but he finally did and was able to rest comfortably on the way to Priest Lake. Poor guy!

We got to Priest Lake in time to see the Reins and boogie with dancin' Frances a little bit.

Melissa and I came home from the Lake today. I think it was our last time there, most likely for the year. If we're lucky, we might get to go for an overnight later in September.

We came home and one of my favorite bloggers and quilters started a pattern business! WAHOO!! Check it out:

The next few days will be spent with finishing up some craft projects, organizing the craft room, and getting some stuff done for work.
Not counting the days...not doing it. :)

...happy birthday to Samdawg!...

Happy Birthday dear Samdawg!

Today Samson turns 4 (human) years old!

Samson understands a lot of words and phrases - but only acts like he understands a few!
He knows and responds to:
  • Samson
  • give me kisses
  • sit
  • scoot over
  • come here...come here Samson...COME HERE!
  • "Do You Wanna Go...." (outside, in the car, etc.)
  • Go to Bed
  • get a toy!
  • No!
  • "treat"
  • "Papa"
  • "Coco" - as in "Where's Coco?!"
  • c'mon
That's all I can think of now, but it seems like he knows a lot!

The other thing that cracks me up is that he likes to sleep under one of our chairs in the living room. He has to belly crawl to get under it and it looks pretty uncomfortable to get out. Usually the only way you can tell he's under there is his nose is barely sticking out. Today when I came home, I thought he was outside, but then I looked at the floor and there was his nose! So funny!

The other thing I think is cute is that he stands in the window and watches us (or anyone) drive into the driveway. He's a one-dog welcoming committee!

We've been spending a lot of quality time together lately! He loves to go behind the fence into the cheat grass. He comes in at least once a day FULL of cheat grass. It takes 20-30 minutes to painstakingly pull each piece out of his hair. He hates it and so do I.

He got a special treat and a new toy for his birthday. Now he's sleeping peacefully on a pillow on the couch. Oh the life.

...a whole lotta nothing....

I can't believe the weekend is over already - the days and weeks seem to be flying by!
I have been doing a lot of sewing and creating gifts for new babies, baby showers, and birthdays. There isn't enough time in the day to get everything done that I want to!

We've been watching a lot of Olympics - even the boring stuff like cross country skiing and curling. :)
I've really been enjoying the moguls, aerials, snowboarding, and alpine skiing! So fun!

Kate came over yesterday to play in the craft room. She got a blanket completed for her baby - and I forgot to take a picture of it! (It was close to midnight when we turned the light off in the craft room!) We researched online how to make cute hair bows for Baby Girl Johnson and picked out some purple and gold flowers so she'll be stylin' for CHS Volleyball!

Samson has survived this week - he's still taking amoxicillan, which he does not enjoy AT ALL. I have to wrestle him down to give it to him. One morning he spit it back in my face. Yuck. Only 5 more days of it. :) Trying to be positive!

Here's some fun pictures of the dogs that I had on my phone.
Samson and I were watching the Olympics together the other day...
Samson showing me his clean (and nice smelling) teeth...
Coco protecting her toy...

Back to the Olympics!

...tooth fairy...

Well, the tooth fairy should be coming to our house tonight to leave Samson a little something.
He got his teeth cleaned today at the Vet's office and ended up having to have one of his molars extracted.
He was kinda groggy when I picked him up this afternoon (he was sedated for the teeth cleaning) and wasn't supposed to be around other dogs for a while, so he got to come to Jr Miss practice and see the girls in their beautiful dresses!
I had to wait in the waiting room for a long time for the doctor to finish up with another patient and I could hear him crying the entire time. So sad...He's a trooper. We had a good snuggle this evening and I think he's going to be just fine.

.s.a.m.s.o.n.

Annette made this absolutely fabulous blog header for me using pictures she took of Samson in October. So adorable!

and fitting -
today was Samson's yearly vet check up and vaccinations.

In case you're wondering:

3 years.5 months

16lbs 2oz

101.3 degrees

He's healthy but in need of a teeth cleaning.
We're both wishing our friends and family a Happy Thanksgiving full of great food, time with family and friends, good games (football, board, card, or otherwise), and fantastic Black Friday ads. :)

[ aw, Samdawg ]

Samson had his portraits taken today by my friend Annette
They turned out awesome! This is my favorite one.
This was achieved by us giving him treats, making crazy noises, and asking questions like: "Samson! Do you want to go for a ride? Do you want to go in the car? Where's Coco? Where's Papa? Samson?! Samson. Samson!"
Only two mishaps: Samson ran head first straight into Annette's floor to ceiling window. Whoops.
Then, when he was sitting on her piano, I think he was getting freaked because everytime he moved, it made noise! Anyway, I went over to pick him up, he stood on his hind legs, and hit his head on the overhang of the top of the piano. Ouch. He's lucky he doesn't have a concussion!
Can't wait to send out my Christmas cards now! Thank you Annette!
